When Can I Start Charging Money for Photography?

When Can I Start Charging Money for Photography?

If you’re trying to start a photography business you may have asked yourself “when can I start charging money for photography”.  You’re not alone. Most photographers wait too long—believing they need more gear, more experience, or a “real” portfolio.

Here’s the truth: you don’t need to be perfect—you need to be ready. These milestones can help you know when that time has come (hint: it might be now).

1. You Can Consistently Deliver In-Focus, Well-Lit Photos

If your images are sharp, exposed correctly, and you’re not relying on luck—congrats! You’re already ahead of most beginners. Clients are paying for reliability, not just creativity.

2. You are using professional equipment and have professional software (like Lightroom or a similar) to be able to provide a properly color-corrected, exposure-correct and cropped image for each image you deliver.

3.  You’ve Shot Some Practice Sessions

These could be friends, styled shoots, or portfolio-building sessions. If you’ve worked with real people and learned how to direct, pose, and problem-solve—you’re gaining valuable experience that’s worth something.

3. People Have Said “You Should Be Charging!”

If you’ve heard this more than once, it’s probably time to listen. When others see the value in your work, it’s a strong sign you’re ready to go pro.

4. You’re Getting Inquiries (Even Just a Few)

If people are asking “how much do you charge?”—don’t say “I’m not charging yet.” Say, “It depends on the job, would you like a quote”. Interest means demand.

5. You Can Communicate Professionally

Being in business means more than taking great photos. If you can respond to emails, send a contract, and show up prepared—you’re ready to charge for your time.

6. You’ve Done the Work for Free—and You’re Ready for More

You’ve shot for free to gain confidence, experience, and build your portfolio. That’s smart. But now it’s time to make the shift—free work was your training ground. You’re ready to graduate.

7. You’re Willing to Learn As You Go

No one has it all figured out on Day 1. If you’re open to growing, learning from mistakes, and showing up anyway—you’re already ahead of the game. Start charging and grow forward.

You don’t need permission to start charging—just a little clarity and a decision. Confidence comes after you start, not before.
